Dan Golemans Social Intelligence Book Review - 3616 Words

Running head: GOLEMAN’S SOCIAL INTELLIGENCE BOOK REVIEW Dan Goleman’s Social Intelligence Book Review Summary of Key Points Unveiling a New Science Goleman contends that the most fundamental revelation of this new discipline is that people are wired to connect. Neuroscience has discovered that our brain’s very design makes it sociable, unavoidably drawn into a neurological connection whenever we interact with another person. This two-way connection allows us to affect everyone we interact with both physically and mentally. The new science of social intelligence should be thought of in terms of being intelligent not just about our personal and professional relationships, but also in them. Goleman explains that this involves†¦show more content†¦It includes first, primal empathy, or feeling with others and sensing nonverbal signals. Second, attunement, or when you listen to others with full attention. Third, empathic accuracy, or when you have an understanding of another person’s thoughts, feelings, and intentions. Fourth, social cognition or knowing how the social world works. Social facility suggests that simply sensing how another person feels, or knowing what they think or intend, does not guarantee fruitful interactions. Social facility builds on social awareness to allow smooth, effective interactions. The scope of social facility includes first, synchrony or interacting smoothly at the nonverbal level. Second, self- presentation or presenting ourselves effectively. Third, influence or shaping the outcome of social interactions. Fourth, is a concern or caring about others’ needs and acting accordingly. Recognizing the Human Being To explain this point, Goleman asks the reader to imagine a doctor, a successful heart surgeon, who is emotionally distant from his patients. Not only is he lacking in compassion, but is also quite dismissive, even disdainful of them and their feelings. Goleman tells the story of a surgeon who had just operated on a patient who had jumped out of a fifth-floor window in a suicide attempt andShow MoreRelatedPsychology Popular Media Paper2807 Words   |  12 Pages show, etc. Conclude by identifying what you believe are the good or bad aspects or results of the construct you observe. | Construct refers to any complex psychological concept. College Free Tuition Should Not Be Free - 971 Words

College Free Tuition Education is one of the best ways to succeed; however not everyone has access to it and not everyone has the opportunity to have a degree. After high school a lot of students drop out because the college tuitions are too expensive; they can’t afford them. A couple weeks ago, president Obama came with a proposition in which to make community college free for students because more jobs will require a degree in the future. The program will concern the students who are serious. It means, in order to qualify, the students have to maintain a 2.5 grade point average C+, and they have to be full time and be able to transfer to a 4-years college. Other people believe that community college should not be free because of the following reasons; the program extends the welfare and encourages people to depend on government and not everyone needs to go to college. A study of the arguments will show that community college education should be free. Differentiation - Competition - and Pricing Strategies

Question: Discuss about the Differentiation, Competition, and Pricing Strategies. Answer: Introduction: The objective of the launch strategy for the vintri Resort is proper communication of the unique set of services to be offered by the resort to the discerning guests. The attempt would be to direct the focus of the tourists to the value for money and quality of the services provided by the resort. The launch of the resort should be able to allow it to communicate the brand value to the customers, develop well-knit working relationships with the concerned stakeholders and identify the needs of the clients in an adequate manner. Continued growth and differentiation would be the two set goals. It has to be kept in mind that the first impression is often the last impression. vintri Resort must, therefore, be prepared to create the best impression by making the target customers aware of the advantages of choosing this resort. The first announcement release needs to be of top class. It would be beneficial to interact with the customers with the help of a video that would encompass all the valued aspects of the resort. This video would be a strategy for attracting the attention of the consumers. It would entertain them as well as inform them about the services of the resort. The content needs to be compelling; however, it needs to be natural and polished (Perreault, Cannon and McCarthy 2013). Engagement with the consumers should be done before the launch of the resort, and this can be done through traditional as well as social media. Social media platform is an increasingly significant route for communication with the multifaceted audience. Exposure on social media needs to be maximised through Youtube, Twitter, FaceBook, blogs. The story o the hotel is to be communicated online and the potential that the resort holds needs to be shared. The launch of the vintri Resort must be done exclusively on the social media platform as many resorts have experience success in doing so (Homburg, Kuester and Krohmer, 2013). The top attraction drawing features of the resort are the spa and tour packages. Discounts on the services provided in these areas as a part of the launch strategy would aim to promote the services to the target customers. Once the customers experience the value-added services of the resort, they would be loyal towards the resort and would lead to high profitability . Offer coupons can be given out to the customer who can later avail them at the resort. This would also be a part of suitable launch strategy (Kotler et al. 2015). Promotional mix The promotion strategy of a resort needs to include the planned tools and techniques for promotions which are very vital for the hospitality industry. Competitive advantage can be achieved through a robust promotional strategy when applied suitably (Manuel et al. 2013). The most significant tool that is to be used for the promotion of the vintri Resort is mass communication for advertisement. This is to be done through print advertisement and internet network. The advertisement campaign needs to pay special attention to the expected customers needs. The integration of facilities together with positive customer characteristics helps in the establishment of a positive image in the market. For gaining benefits as well as attracting customers, the resort must represent the key attributes it holds uniquely and clearly in the advertisements. Social media and digital presence are to be made felt to the customers. A high quality website would be the main form of advertisement. Apart from thi s, a regular presence in social media like Facebook, Youtube, would be highly beneficial. More digital connection implies more connection with the customers. The customers would be given a chance to review the resort sufficiently and make their choice. Interaction with the customers through the internet would give the scope of interacting with the customers as per their convenience and without any enforcement (Mok, Sparks and Kadampully 2013). The other domains where vintri Resort needs to give attention to for making the promotional strategy better are personal selling, public relation, and direct marketing. Personal selling would be a good approach for targeting the domestic customers in the highly competitive market. Relationship with the domestic market can be built with the personal selling approaches. A number of activities can be considered for reaching to the target audience. Brand image improvement is achieved through this process. Public relation approach refers to the endorsement of services through the demonstration of the resort as a competent member in the local community. A positive word of mouth would be spread through this approach and a strong customer base would be formed. Direct marketing can be considered through public relation agencies and travel agencies. Contact with corporate organisations can be established through these channels and after a meeting with them on can enter into a contract. This wo uld bring higher profitability for the resort. The agencies would be responsible for direct marketing and promote the services of the resort to the customers (Dev 2014). Yang, Zhang and Mattila (2016) highlight some key promotional strategies for resorts. vintri Resort can offer special discounts and deals in the low seasons, commonly called seasonal promotions. This would curb the potential revenue loss in low seasons. The seasonal promotions can be tailored as per the needs of the customer so as to cater to a broader range of customers. Rewarding the guests would make up a loyalty program. This would make the customers choose this particular resort over others in the competitive environment. Promotional events, in the form of games and contests, would boost the revenue by attracting locals. Pricing vintri Resort must have a proper understanding of differential pricing for achieving optimal revenue. A strong foundation for pricing structure needs to be established. Pricing is to be decided after matching the prices with the competitors. While one service can be of the same price, another service can be of a higher price. This would enable the deal-seeking guests to choose vintri Resort over the other resorts in the same area without missing an opportunity to make more profit. The rates are to be set at unrounded prices. This is an old but effective technique. This method of pricing is considered as a common pricing strategy, referred to as the psychological pricing. If the price is $99 instead of $100, the price is psychologically perceived to be much less despite the actual differences. Sales are reported to be boosted using this pricing strategy (Becerra, Santal and Silva 2013). The prices of the most basic services are to be set at the cheapest rate, and the other services ar e to be set close to that of the competitors. This helps in capturing the middle market, as well as higher and lower market at a go. Being better among the rest is the key to success (Repetti, Roe and Gregory 2015). Delivering some extra services helps in justifying the price increase in case the services are set at the high price as compared to competitors. A high standard is set thereby that indicates that the resort holds higher value. This makes consumers pay more for. Pursuing this strategy vintri Resort can deliver the values promised (Enz, Canina and Rest 2016). Distribution The main motto of the distribution in the hospitality sector is to utilise different channels for finding customers and help in making the purchasing more swift process. There are a number of channels that resorts and hotels can use for reaching to the target customers. While selecting a channel for distribution, the resort must have a proper understanding of the target customers and their choices (Schegg et al. 2013). The most efficient distribution channel for vintri Resort would be direct to customer through which the hotel can communicate with the customers in a direct manner, with no involvement of any intermediaries. It is desirable that the customers do the booking at the front desk of the resort directly. In such cases, customers can also book the next reservation at the time of checking out after a stay at the resort. The internet has also opened new avenues for customers to get in touch with the resort and book as per their convenience. This form is also a way of directly c ommunicating with the customers. Hotel services are consumed in a real-time environment. The services regarding distribution must, therefore, be carried out in a convenient manner to the larger population of customers. vintri Resort would maintain a front office around the clock so that the concerns of the clients can be faced at the time of their need. The flexibility would help in attracting the travellers. Customers should be able to contact the resort through fax, email, and telephone. vintri Resort needs to have a website citing all the details of the resort. Customers can make their reservations via the hotel website. When a customer makes a reservation in the resort, the customers can pay for their booking just before the arrival. This would lead to advance sales, a crucial aspect while selling hotel room (Stangl, Inversini and Schegg 2016). Development of information communication technology (ICT) along with the growth of the internet and computerised systems would make a pr ominent impact on the distribution network of the resort. The internet would be the direct channel between companies and customers. It would increase the choice of other channels using which booking can be ideally done. The Internet is gradually getting a position in the direct marketing; however, in some cases, intermediaries may be more suitable in offering the services. Advantages of considering the use of the above mentioned distribution channels are that the resort can reach to the customers adequately and provide a suitable access point for the potential customers (Kotler et al. 2015). White Priviledge free essay sample

What it means to be white can have so many definitions and/or variations. What it means to be white is to be above the rest [blacks]. Whites are taught to think they are better than blacks; more privileged than one another. But what they failed to realize is how privileged they actually are. Author Peggy McIntosh takes viewers on an in depth voyage on what it means to be white, what whiteness is, and how privileged they are. White privilege refers to the set of social privileges that white people are argued to benefit afar from commonly experienced people of color in the same social, political, or economic setting. Whiteness represents both noticeable as well as less noticeable unspoken advantages that white individuals may not recognize they have. The notion of white privilege just as male privilege implies that whites assumingly has the right to be considered as normal no matter how culturally bias this problem may seem. We will write a custom essay sample on White Priviledge or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page McIntosh explains that as a white person, she realizes she had been taught about racism as something that puts others at a disadvantage. Students need to explore what it means to be white because they have become wrapped in what it is like to be black, meaning blacks being stereotyped as poor and disadvantaged. As McIntosh puts it being white is considered to be more privileged. In my opinion, to be white is to be as ordinary as any other person. Not looking at the fact that racism is still on the rise everywhere I go, to be white simply means to be more privileged than the lower working class. Nevertheless, whiteness and white privilege affects both whites as well as blacks. In my own experiences whiteness has affected me in my school as well as personal life. White privilege reminds me of time when there was segregation present. Cases of whiteness has taken away from many opportunities for blacks. Although it may seem biased it’s true. McIntosh explains that as she grew older she was trained to be white. Her whiteness taught her what it was like to be racist and to feel like she was free from all the hostility and distress that blacks experienced. Many, perhaps most, of our white students in the United States think that racism doesn’t affect them because they are not people of color; they do not see whiteness as a racial identity. Whiteness and white privilege is also on the rise in the United States. It seems as though it has become the new American Dream. Whether a person is taught to be white or it is learn throughout one’s life span there is no end to it. Peggy McIntosh also gives many examples on how whites can level the issue of whites being over-privileged. White individuals need to seek to change their attitudes says, McIntosh. Consequently, the American Dream is different for everyone no matter what our race, ethnicity, age, or social competency may be. Just as men feel they have to always take an extra step to be noticed, women, black or white must do the same too. Peggy McIntosh released a lot of information that should be vital to students everywhere. Knowing how they can be affected by white privilege can be very important to students everywhere, not to mention English language learners as well. The effects of white privilege may have a greater effect in them seeing as they are just learning the English language and they may grasp the wrong customs.

Modular Arithmetic Essays - Algebra, Computer Arithmetic

Modular Arithmetic Modular arithmetic can be used to compute exactly, at low cost, a set of simple computations. These include most geometric predicates, that need to be checked exactly, and especially, the sign of determinants and more general polynomial expressions. Modular arithmetic resides on the Chinese Remainder Theorem, which states that, when computing an integer expression, you only have to compute it modulo several relatively prime integers called the modulis. The true integer value can then be deduced, but also only its sign, in a simple and efficient maner. The main drawback with modular arithmetic is its static nature, because we need to have a bound on the result to be sure that we preserve ourselves from overflows (that can't be detected easily while computing). The smaller this known bound is, the less computations we have to do. We have developped a set of efficient tools to deal with these problems, and we propose a filtered approach, that is, an approximate computation using floating point arithmetic, followed, in the bad case, by a modular computation of the expression of which we know a bound, thanks to the floating point computation we have just done. Theoretical work has been done in common with , , Victor Pan and. See the bibliography for details. At the moment, only the tools to compute without filters are available. The aim is now to build a compiler, that produces exact geometric predicates with the following scheme: filter + modular computation. This approach is not compulsory optimal in all cases, but it has the advantage of simpleness in most geometric tests, because it's general enough. Concerning the implementation, the Modular Package contains routines to compute sign of determinants and polynomial expressions, using modular arithmetic. It is already usable, to compute signs of determinants, in any dimension, with integer entries of less than 53 bits. In the near future, we plan to add a floating point filter before the modular computation.

A.D.H. A.D.H.D.Attention deficit hyperactive disorder also known as A.D.H.D. is thought to be a disease. There are no clinical tests such as imaging or lab work to diagnose this condition. If a child is very active, not able to sit still or listen and follow directions, or maybe daydreams this is a potential for A.D.H.D. There is a lot of controversy surrounding this issue. One is the labeling of a child for life, the other is the mind altering drugs a child has to be put on.A.D.H.D. is said to be a psychological disease, however, there are reputable physicians who worry these behavior tendencies will increase the improper diagnosis of other wise normal behaviors in children. Information Systems and Technologies Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Information Systems and Technologies - Essay Example Information systems are usually confused by management information systems. However, MIS strictly refers to the management of information systems whereas information systems include systems that include decision making as well. In today's every growing fast paced world, information is termed valuable more then any other tangible asset. The reason is that information systems have slowly and gradually taken over the decision making responsibilities from human beings. In this 'Information Age', these systems have become the basis of conducting efficient business. In today's world, the environment changes every other day. With the changes taking place everyday, it is a requirement for the companies to continuously collect and manage information so that they may be better informed then their competitors. This will lead to the development of a viable advantage that will help organizations in better decision making. Gaining competitive advantage over competitors and rival companies is one of the major strategies that can help companies excel in the long run. The question arises that if the application of IT really provides a competitive edge to organizations. Answers to this question have been discussed and explored over many decades and it will be explored for the many years to come due to the ever-changing and evolving economic conditions of the world and transformation of industries. Due to these explorations, we have found out that usage of information technology effectively in organizations can create legendary results. Examples include the American Airlines Sabre System for traveling reservations, the FedEx's suite of tracking shipments and packages and Amazon.com's approach to internet based retailing. All the above mentioned examples have put forward the idea that information technology can help serve as a competitive advantage if it is used to leverage operational and organizational activities and support the collection of critical data at the right time. COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE IN HEALTHCARE ORGANIZATIONS Information Technology soft wares and systems are tremendously used in today's health care organizations to manage the extensive amount of data and analyzing it critically to help benefit the patients, staff, doctors and the overall organization. The basic idea is not applying the system; however, competitive advantage is gained depending on three factors. These factors are how the system is implemented, whether the implementation done was cheaper or not then the competitors and the strengths of the organization's technical and IT staff. Effective implementation of IT in an organization can make the programs used in the organization faster, less prone to error and convenient. For example, accounts receivable applications have made the collection A/R processes faster, economical and less expensive. To improve organizational performance the right kind of information system must be implemented. The leverage of the processes is the most effective when the process on which the technology is applied are core processes that customers usually use to gauge the performance of an organization. For
